DNA SOLVES 2003 BURGLARY CASE

OCALA: On July 28, 2003, a residence in the 6700 block of NW 35th Avenue Road in northwest Marion County was broken into and a computer system was taken. A shirt with dark colored stains was found by a broken window at the rear of the residence. The stains were suspected to be blood from the intruder.

The shirt was sent to the lab at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for testing. The results were positive and when run through the offender database matched the DNA of black male Gerard Antaun McNeil.

McNeil had previously been in the Marion County Jail for numerous drug charges throughout 2003, but was not incarcerated during the time of the break-in. He also served approximately 7 months during 2005. At the time of these findings, he was incarcerated at the Lawtey Correctional Institution.

Detectives interviewed McNeil who denied being at the residence but did admit to living in the area at that time. These results were reviewed by the State Attorney's Office who decided to issue a warrant for McNeil's arrest upon his release from prison, which is estimated to be some time in the year 2011. Upon his release, he will be charged with Burglary and Grand Theft.

DNA results have helped Marion County Sheriff's Office Detectives solve numerous cases over the last year.
