The office of the Sheriff originated in the British Isles where each shire or county had a reeve or an appointed enforcer of writs or orders of the king. Hence the name of the office became Shire-reeve. The office was incorporated into local government in the new world the name evolved to Sheriff.
Therefore, be it entirely fitting that in 2002 AD; Ed Dean, being the sheriff of Marion County Florida ordered that the Sheriff’s Pipes and Drums be formed.
Since its inception the band, made up of almost entirely of volunteers, has performed at numerous funerals, parades, memorials, and civic functions. Dressed in traditional Scottish military uniform the band continues to be a unique representative of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the people of Marion County.
